Philae Temple Egypt – testing image gallery APIs

I’m testing a rather nifty flickr plug-in called Flickr Insert from Stuffed Guys. It works by translating a special flickr tag into static links to flickr pictures in the post, and it also maintains a cache of thumbnails on your local server.

Below is an example of my flickr images that were tagged with “wpphilaetempleegypt” at the time of posting.

Last.fm – custom radio stations based on music profiles

Last.fm

Last.fm is a really clever idea. You install a plug-in for your media player, that automatically uploads a list of songs you’ve listened to. Based on your preferences, the music you’ve listened to and other users preferences, the service can make recommendations for you, for instance, based on similarity.

BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Project Paperclip: Dark side of the Moon

BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Project Paperclip: Dark side of the Moon

An article describing the so called Project Paperclip, that aimed to secure the brightest of the Nazi German scientists for the US – most of whom were die-hard Nazis.

Without the sacrifice of thousands in the Nazi labour camps where the V2 rockets were produced, we would not have gotten to moon as early as we did.

Food for thought!

Orkut’s idea of “funny”

Orkut is obviously in the process of being given a serious overhaul, but the error messages that I get these days are just a little too upbeat – to the brink of being downright annoying.

Bad, bad server. No donut for you.

Unfortunately, the orkut.com server has acted out in an unexpected way. Hopefully, it will return to its helpful self if you try again in a few minutes.

It’s likely that the server will behave this way on occasion during the coming months. We apologize for the inconvenience and for our server’s lack of consideration for others.

iPod nano flashing and switching evangelism

My iPod nano does draw some comments. Since I got the nano lanyard and started wearing the nano around my neck, people have stopped me and asked what it is – the reaction is much like the iPod nano TV add. But since the nano can be used to break the ice – it’s a good opportunity do some switching evangelism.

Reporters sans frontières – Handbook for bloggers and cyber-dissidents

Reporters sans frontières – Handbook for bloggers and cyber-dissidents

RSF has published a handbook for bloggers – eg. indivduals that publish to the web – like yours truly. In many countries with totalitarian regimes, bloggers are the only real journalists.
This is a very useful guide…Including detailed instructions on how to publish to the Internet annonymously – e.g. using proxies. Big thumbs up to RSF.
